This project involved the comprehensive refurbishment and extension of the Grade II listed 1930s outdoor swimming pool, known as ‘Brixton Beach’. The challenge was to enable the lido to be financially self-supporting and to ensure its future without losing the fabulous atmosphere that makes it such a well loved place.
Working closely with The Twentieth Century Society we were able to partially demolish and extend the existing building to enable the proposed works. Our solution, which was strongly supported by English Heritage, was to move the southernmost wall outwards, doubling the width of the south wing. This gives space for more indoor activities, such as yoga studios, a sauna, gym and therapy rooms, which can be used throughout the year and cross-subsidise the outdoor pool.
