Andrew Beharrell will be stepping back from the role of Senior Partner at PTE at the end of September, to become a Senior Advisor. This is a long-planned step in our strategy of continuous succession and completes the transfer of the practice from its second to third generation of leaders.
Over thirty of Andrew's thirty six years at PTE have been as Director or Partner, and he has been central to the practice's direction and growth over this time, as well as in the geographic expansion of our work and diversification into schools, workplaces and specialist housing. Andrew's championing of Knowledge Hub, PTE's thriving Research and Development department, has produced a unique driver of continuous innovation and feedback through our design work, as well as a well-used source of advice to clients.
The influence of Andrew's clear and powerful thinking, writing and speaking can be seen in a series of collaborative publications including Superdensity, Altered Estates and Distinctively Local. His approach to concept design, and finding the right 'diagram' for every site and brief, have become part of PTE's DNA, and the foundation of many projects that have won awards and, more importantly, delighted their residents. His influence is embodied in the strength and focus of the next generation, and PTE's ambitious plans for the years ahead.
Andrew says: "In my new part-time role I will be focusing on helping our Knowledge Hub to maintain and improve design standards across the practice. I will continue to write about PTE and wider housing and regeneration issues, and I will retain direct involvement in selected projects and bids.
"It has been a huge privilege and pleasure to spend the last 36 years working at PTE - and I am looking forward to continuing in a less responsible role! I have worked with so many wonderful clients and colleagues, participated in great projects and seen the practice mature and grow into the powerhouse it is today.
"Although this remains an uncertain time for our industry and the wider world, PTE has emerged from the last six months with a great portfolio of clients and projects, strong financial foundations and a hugely capable and enthusiastic team. I am very optimistic about our future."
Connaught Gardens in Muswell Hill is one of PTE's own property developments and also Andrew's home. It typifies the practice's approach to smart site planning, contextual domestic architecture, and the integration of modern light-filled interiors with traditional forms and materials - see the film on the the project page.
